Alpine F1 officially confirms Franco Colapinto’s multi-year commitment, ensuring his role as test and reserve driver throughout the 2025 season and beyond.
Alpine F1 also confirmed today the second rumor we mentioned this morning: its agreement with Williams Racing for Franco Colapinto’s services over multiple years.
The 21-year-old Argentinian will serve as a test and reserve driver in the 2025 season. His arrival strengthens the pool of talent the team can draw upon for driving duties throughout the year.
In this role, Franco will attend several Grands Prix during the season. He will also share driving duties with Paul Aron and Ryō Hirakawa as part of the TPC program with older F1 cars, while contributing to the team’s simulator efforts in Enstone.
“I am extremely happy to have the opportunity to join BWT Alpine Formula One Team,” says Franco Colapinto.
“First of all, I want to thank Williams for all their support since my arrival in the Academy at the last race in Abu Dhabi. They made my Formula 1 dreams come true, and I will always be grateful. Now it is time to write a new chapter, and taking on this challenge with BWT Alpine Formula One Team is truly an honor. A huge thank you to Luca [de Meo], Flavio [Briatore], and Oliver [Oakes] for believing in me and welcoming me with open arms. I can’t wait to get started and see where this adventure takes us. I also want to thank all the sponsors and partners who supported me in my 2024 season challenges. Your backing made this possible, and ‘¡Muchas gracias!’ to my amazing fans in Argentina. Your passion and support mean a great deal to me. Let’s aim for even bigger things in 2025 and beyond.”
Flavio Briatore, Executive Advisor, adds: “We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Williams Racing to sign Franco Colapinto. Clearly, Franco is currently among the best prospects in motorsport. It is fair to say he surprised many people, myself included, from the moment he appeared on the Formula 1 grid last year. His performances were very impressive for a rookie. We have our eye on the future, and his signing means we have an excellent pool of young drivers we can rely on and work with to develop the team toward future success.”
Williams F1 explains this decision
James Vowles, Williams F1 Team Principal, spoke about the decision to release Colapinto to a rival team. He emphasizes that the Argentinian now has a chance to race with Alpine as early as this season, implying that Jack Doohan will indeed be under pressure.
“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Alpine for Franco to join the team on a multi-year basis starting in 2025. Over nine memorable races with Williams, he clearly showed he deserved a place in Formula 1, and we have always said we would support him in achieving that.”
