Jordan Condemns FIA’s “Nitpicky” Approach to Verstappen’s Swearing

Max Verstappen faces criticism from the FIA over swearing, sparking backlash from former team boss Eddie Jordan against strict regulations.

Max Verstappen has been vigorously defended in what’s been described as “an absolutely absurd battle” with the FIA over profanity.

Verstappen became embroiled in a dispute with the governing body, which penalized him for swearing during an FIA press conference.

The three-time F1 world champion was sentenced to perform community service after using the word “Fuck” before the Singapore Grand Prix to describe his car’s performance in the previous race in Baku.

Since that incident, Charles Leclerc was fined for also swearing in an FIA press conference in Mexico.

This week, a statement was issued by the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), addressed to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The GPDA criticized the Saudi official, noting the essential difference between swearing to insult someone and using it to describe an object or situation.

“It’s a storm in a teacup, it’s an absolutely absurd battle from the FIA,” said Eddie Jordan, former F1 team principal.

“Personally, I think it started as a minor attack on Max.”

“But Max is too smart for many people, as we’ve seen, not only on the track but also off it. All F1 drivers agree. If the car isn’t working, and you want to use the F-word, then that’s what you use.”

“It’s the most used word in English right now, whether we like it or not. Naturally, we don’t want it in a confrontational or aggressive context.”

“But when describing something, when something happens, and you say the car is broken or whatever, and if you want to use the F-word to describe that, I think it brilliantly captures it because everyone knows what it means, and no one takes it as an insult.”
