FIA Shakeup Wittich’s Exit Sparks Speculation

Villeneuve: Wittich Faces Fallout Over Brazil Calls

19/11/2024

Jacques Villeneuve suggests Niels Wittich’s sudden departure is linked to controversial decisions at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Villeneuve suggested that Niels Wittich’s abrupt departure was a direct consequence of his handling of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The FIA confirmed last week that Wittich would no longer serve as race director, effective immediately, stating he had left the FIA to pursue new opportunities. However, Wittich claimed he had not resigned but was instead removed from his position.

Villeneuve suggested that certain decisions made during the São Paulo weekend, which took place under dangerous conditions, were at the root of the situation.

Race direction faced criticism from Red Bull during qualifying for delaying a red flag after Lance Stroll’s crash, which led to Max Verstappen’s premature elimination from the session.

“Wittich’s departure is surprising with three races to go,” Villeneuve admitted.

“This is big news. I’d like to know why. Perhaps many people were unhappy with the decisions in Brazil.”

“There were also controversies in Austin and Mexico. We don’t know if there are personal issues unrelated to racing, so let’s not jump to conclusions.”

“Still, it’s surprising to have such a change with three races left. He was experienced, quite strict, and straightforward. Something has happened that we’re unaware of.”

The FIA confirmed Rui Marques will take over as race director for the final three races of the season.

Marques’ most recent experience is as race director in the Formula 2 and Formula 3 categories.
