FIA Probes McLaren After Red Bull Brake Claim

Red Bull Sparks Row Over McLaren F1’s Brakes

17/07/2024

Red Bull’s complaint to the FIA scrutinizes McLaren F1’s MCL38 brakes, stirring controversy in the racing world.

Flexible front wings have been a regular discussion topic in F1 lately, with Red Bull seeking clarifications from the FIA on the versions used by Mercedes and McLaren F1 recently.

However, the Austrian team has also recently complained about McLaren’s brakes.

The Woking team would use additional holes in the brake drums at the front and rear. Teams use sensors to collect information on the temperature of the rims and tires, but Red Bull suspected that McLaren had created an additional cooling hole, which would violate the regulations.

The additional hole would provide access to a cable for a sensor that measures the temperature inside the brake cylinder ventilator.

Red Bull’s suspicions were fueled by the fact that Lando Norris performed very well in Miami, Imola, and Spain, where he preserved his tires better than Max Verstappen. However, these sensors must be removed before Free Practice 3 and the holes sealed.

According to Red Bull, the holes on the McLarens sometimes remained open during the races, but the FIA contested this suspicion.

The Federation inspected the McLarens and it turned out that the team had indeed sealed the holes in Austria and Britain.

It is unclear whether McLaren acted this way after Red Bull’s complaint or following the FIA’s inspections…
