FIA Clears Hamilton and Verstappen in Hungary Clash

Official : No Fault Found – FIA Ends Hamilton-Verstappen Probe

21/07/2024

FIA concludes no penalties necessary after a detailed review of the Hamilton-Verstappen incident in Hungary.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were summoned by the FIA following the Hungarian Grand Prix to discuss their on-track collision.

The race stewards have decided to take no further action, and no penalties will be imposed on either driver.

Thus, the results of the Grand Prix stand as final.

Details of the Decision:

The stewards heard from the driver of car 1 (Max Verstappen), the driver of car 44 (Lewis Hamilton), the team representatives, and reviewed data from the positioning system, video footage, timing, telemetry, and onboard video evidence.

Approaching turn 1, car 44 and car 1 overtook car 23. Car 44 returned to the racing line before the braking zone and began turning into turn 1. Car 1 approached the turn faster than in previous laps (due to DRS) and braked at the same point as before.

The driver of car 1 contended that car 44 was changing direction during braking. The driver of car 44 stated he was merely following his normal racing line (confirmed by video review and telemetry evidence from previous laps).

It was evident that car 1 locked both front wheels approaching turn 1 before an impact occurred, but it missed the normal turning line for a typical overtaking maneuver.

The driver of car 44 described it as a racing incident, while the driver of car 1 maintained it was a case of changing direction during braking.

The stewards do not regard this as a typical case of “changing direction during braking”, although it was determined that the driver of car 44 could have done more to avoid the collision.

As a result, we determine that no driver was primarily at fault and decide to take no further action.
