FIA Changes for 2026 Boosted Downforce and Design Flexibility

F1 2026: Higher Downforce, More Freedom in Car Design, Says Stella

09/11/2024

FIA’s latest adjustments promise more downforce and design freedom, setting the stage for diverse concepts in 2026 F1 car models.

The FIA and the teams have worked jointly on amendments to the Technical Regulations for 2026, and the recent changes are expected to enhance performance (read here) but, more importantly, to offer greater freedom and variety in car designs.

Andrea Stella, the McLaren F1 team principal, explained this in Brazil.

“With the recent adjustment in car geometry, particularly from an aerodynamic standpoint, two main things have been achieved, as you mentioned. Firstly, a much higher level of downforce, and secondly, greater design freedom,” Stella stated.

“We welcome both. We welcome the increased freedom. I think it will allow teams to leverage their knowledge and methodologies.”

“The knowledge accumulated over the years, even with different regulations, offers a way to create differentiation. We’ve always advocated for this type of approach, and we look forward to this expanded freedom.”

James Vowles, Williams’ team principal, confirmed that the cars would look different thanks to these changes and commended the FIA’s role in this: “Well put by Andrea, as always. It’s fundamentally true.”

“In response to your question, we now have more freedom, which allows us to see where we’re heading. There are thus more flow-control devices in place, which reduces downforce but brings differentiation among teams.”

“What’s really positive as well is that there are still small areas of improvement around the diffuser. But again, what’s great is that the teams and the FIA are working hand-in-hand to address this. Every time a change like this is made, it has consequences.”

“But I think what you’ll see now is that, instead of all teams working on the same few millimeters, there will be different concepts. Personally, I think it’s a good thing for the sport.”
