The FIA’s latest F1 Commission meeting in Geneva solidifies 2025 updates and advances 2026 regulatory framework for inclusive racing.
The fifth meeting of the F1 Commission in 2024 was held today at the FIA offices in Geneva, Switzerland, chaired by Nikolas Tombazis, FIA’s director of single-seater categories, and Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.
The FIA shared the key points below.
— The Commission approved a series of technical adjustments for the 2025 season, including the introduction of a driver cooling kit when a heat risk is declared, following encouraging test results.
— Building on discussions sparked by the recent São Paulo Grand Prix, the Commission confirmed a revised protocol for grid compression when a team withdraws a car.
— The initiative for a rookie sprint race was also reviewed. The Commission remains interested in the concept and will examine it further in 2025 with the aim of organizing a rookie sprint race in 2026.
— The Commission approved additional measures to extend the cost exclusions of sustainability initiatives from the financial regulations for 2025.
2026 Regulations
Significant progress has been made on drafting the regulations for 2026. Section A, intended to provide a consistent framework for all following sections, is expected to be presented at the first meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in 2025.
In Section B, revisions to the Sporting Regulations will incorporate gender-neutral language, underscoring the FIA’s commitment to inclusion at all levels.
The Commission was updated on the progress with teams, and the Technical Regulations (Section C) should be finalized in time for the next WMSC, with initial performance-level targets expected to be met.
Regarding the Financial Regulations (Section D), measures aimed at strengthening confidentiality provisions in investigations and other procedural matters were discussed.
