Ferrari Scrambles to Fix Costly Setup Mistake

Ferrari Works to Fix Simulator Data Flaw After Setup Mistake in Melbourne

20/03/2025

Ferrari’s faulty simulator data led to poor setup choices in Melbourne, raising concerns over their 2025 title hopes ahead of the Chinese GP.

Ferrari has been working tirelessly at its Maranello simulator to correct a data flaw that led to incorrect setup choices at the Australian Grand Prix.

All the preseason hype about a potential title fight involving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc quickly faded last weekend as the 2025 season kicked off in Melbourne.

“We made a setup mistake,” admitted team principal Fred Vasseur.

As the team prepares for this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, internal sources suggest Ferrari’s simulator produced inaccurate data ahead of Melbourne, leading to incorrect ride height settings and a poor rear wing choice.

But the issue might run deeper.

“I spoke with Fred Vasseur,” said former Haas F1 team boss Guenther Steiner. “He was a bit disappointed with the winter development. He also thought they would be closer.”

Ex-F1 driver Ralf Schumacher fears that if Vasseur fails to deliver a winning car for the third consecutive year, his position at Ferrari could be at risk.

“If they don’t seriously challenge for the title and secure multiple victories, Ferrari will undoubtedly rethink everything—something they unfortunately have a history of doing,” Schumacher said. “That would be a shame because I truly believe Vasseur is the right man for the job.”

Another factor at play is Hamilton’s underwhelming start following the excitement around his move from Mercedes.

“The honeymoon phase is over,” Steiner pointed out. “Now, he has to deliver.”

“At Ferrari, no one is safe,” added Schumacher. “That includes the drivers too.”
