Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is optimistic about his upcoming move to Williams F1, praising their recent improvements and embracing future challenges.
As he competes in his final races with Ferrari, Carlos Sainz is already considering the challenge that Williams F1 will pose next year. However, he explains in Austin that neither of these thoughts consumes him, and he thinks about both separately.
“For me, these are two distinct things. I’m really looking forward to next year and taking on the challenge with Williams,” the Spaniard assures. “First of all, it’s encouraging to see how much they’ve improved recently and how this car can now get into the points quite often over the last races.”
“So it’s a boost, and I’m obviously eager for that. But first, there’s work to be done to finish the year with six races remaining in a car that can potentially allow me to win a race or secure a few additional podiums.”
“And I want to maximize this opportunity to see if I can help the team finish as high as possible in the Constructors’ Championship and, of course, give myself the great gift of a podium or a victory, which is what I’m aiming for and focusing on in these last six races.”
The Spaniard would like to win one last time in Ferrari colors but won’t be disheartened if it doesn’t happen: “Nothing special, except a strong motivation to try to achieve it. Nothing would please me more than reaching such a goal before the end of the year.”
“I will give my best. If I succeed, all the better, and I won’t fail to celebrate it. And if not, you know, I don’t think it will be my last chance to fight for victories or podiums in Formula 1.”
“So I will continue to work hard to try to put myself in a position—even if it’s with Williams or in the future—to win another race because that’s what I’m hungry for and what I believe I can do, and what I’ve proven I can do at Ferrari. So, yes, it doesn’t stop there.”
If he’s motivated by the Williams challenge, it’s also because James Vowles has been very convincing and reliable in their discussions: “On one hand, it’s very important because, obviously, during these conversations with James, we talked a lot about this year, the progress they were going to make, and the position they would occupy in 2025.”
“And so far, he has been a man of his word and expectations, which is never obvious in F1. But you’ve clearly seen this year that bringing three-tenths to the car doesn’t always mean three-tenths on paper. Yes, he has been a man of his word in that sense, and the team seems to be taking steps in the right direction.”
“At the same time, this news I’ve received from him and these promises—because they weren’t promises; they were expectations of a faster car throughout the season and into next year—didn’t really affect my decision.”
“As I said, my decision was much more based on the people and the feeling I had when talking to the management, the owners, and the entire organization, and not so much on short-term performance gains.”
“What convinced me, more than the downforce they were going to add or the team’s situation in six months or a year, was the people, the professionalism, and the vision of the project they had. That’s what made the difference for me.”
