Lewis Hamilton takes pole for the Shanghai Sprint, delivering an emotional and unexpected performance in only his second race for Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton delivered a stunning performance in Shanghai, claiming pole position for Saturday’s F1 Sprint. The Ferrari driver was visibly emotional and surprised as he stepped out of the car—already topping the timesheets in just his second competitive weekend with the Scuderia.
“First of all, massive thanks to the amazing fans here,” Hamilton said, beaming with joy. “I didn’t expect this result, but I’m so proud and happy. Our last race was a disaster, so we really needed this boost—not just from the car, but from the whole team.”
The seven-time world champion praised both the circuit and the atmosphere: “I love this track, and Shanghai is such a beautiful city. The weather was perfect today, and the car came alive from the very first lap. We made some key changes, and honestly, I’m still a bit in shock.”
Hamilton Shines Early in Ferrari Red
Although the Sprint pole isn’t for the main race, Hamilton knows it’s an important step forward. “It’s not the Grand Prix, so we still have work to do, but this is definitely a big confidence boost heading into Sunday.”
Reflecting on his performance, Hamilton explained how he kept improving throughout the session. Ending a session in P1, especially in a Ferrari, hit differently. “My first sector was really strong—that’s where I made the biggest gains. The whole lap just kept getting better. And to see that No. 1 on the board, sitting in a red car… it’s something special.”
Looking ahead, Hamilton is preparing for a big challenge. Max Verstappen will line up alongside him on the front row, while the fast McLarens—despite a tough Shootout—start just behind in P3 and P6.
“I’ve done a race sim in Bahrain and a wet race in Melbourne, but tomorrow will be my first real long run,” he said. “Sunday will be my first dry Grand Prix with Ferrari, so I’m still learning. The McLarens are quick, and so is Max. We’ll stay focused, stay positive, and give it everything we’ve got.”
