Despite expectations, Ferrari retains Oliver Bearman, not releasing him to Haas for the Baku F1 race as planned.
Ferrari is not yet ready to confirm that it will release its reserve driver for another one-off Formula 1 race.
The clash between Kevin Magnussen and Pierre Gasly at Monza brought the Haas driver to the brink of 12 penalty points on his super license—triggering an automatic one-race ban for Baku.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu has confirmed that Haas F1 will not appeal.
It makes perfect sense for Haas F1 to place Oliver Bearman, its full-time confirmed driver for 2025, in Magnussen’s car for the Azerbaijan GP.
The issue is that the 19-year-old Brit would miss a round of the Formula 2 championship, although it is true that he is not a title contender.
But the more significant problem is that this move would deprive Ferrari of its full-time reserve driver designated for Baku.
When asked if he was open to letting Bearman go to Haas for Baku, Ferrari boss Frédéric Vasseur responded on Sunday: “Let me focus on Ferrari tonight, as we just won a race.”
“I’ll have to think about it,” added the Frenchman. “I didn’t even know Kevin would be out (for Azerbaijan).”
As for Magnussen, he has expressed a desire to race in another series—like the WEC or IndyCar—next year if he is unable to continue his F1 driving career.
However, Haas F1 owner Gene Haas might offer Magnussen a full-time reserve driver role within the team for 2025.
