Ferrari Test Off for Hamilton; F1 Rivals Cleared to Drive

No Abu Dhabi test with Ferrari for Hamilton

25/10/2024

Hamilton won’t test with Ferrari in Abu Dhabi, while other drivers switching teams gain approval to test with future crews.

Lewis Hamilton will not be experiencing life in a red cockpit during the end-of-season tests in Abu Dhabi; that’s now certain.

Other drivers switching teams between 2024 and 2025, including Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, and the man Hamilton is set to replace at Ferrari—Carlos Sainz—have all been cleared to test with their new teams after the season ends.

However, Hamilton still has commitments with Mercedes after the final race of the year. He will attend a sponsor event for Petronas in Malaysia and then participate in a farewell tour through Brackley, Brixworth, and even Stuttgart.

Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur is not holding Sainz strictly to his contract until December 31, allowing him to test for Williams in Abu Dhabi.

“If I’m a kind person, they can have him,” the Frenchman smiled.

Vasseur, however, will have to wait until 2025 before Hamilton is free to test with Ferrari, though a testing program could be arranged as early as January with older F1 cars to help him get acquainted with his new engineers and Scuderia procedures.

Ocon has also been permitted by Alpine F1 to make his first test with Haas F1. Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu similarly allowed Nico Hulkenberg to join Sauber/Stake F1 ahead of schedule.

“If you ask my opinion, Nico can drive for Sauber (in Abu Dhabi). There’s no reason to hold him back.”
