Ferrari Taps Hamilton to Narrow Margins in Title Quest

Vasseur: Hamilton will be an asset in “chasing the last thousandths.”

Lewis Hamilton joins Ferrari, bringing experience and precision to help the Scuderia chase vital margins in a tight title fight.

Fred Vasseur is convinced that Lewis Hamilton will be an asset for Ferrari in its quest for world titles. With margins being tight, the Scuderia’s team principal trusts his future driver to extract every ounce of performance while bringing experience and a culture that will challenge Ferrari’s status quo.

“I think it’s always important to have people coming from other teams with a different culture,” Vasseur said. “It’s not about Italians, English, or anything else. It’s just that we are in a field where knowledge transfer matters, and we are a bit isolated.”

“This is already the case because we have recruited a bit from other teams, and I think it’s a good thing because it allows you to see things a little differently.”

“I’m convinced Lewis will bring his own experience, with his 18 or 17 years in F1, his titles, and so on. Performance doesn’t come only from my hero or someone else. It comes from everyone, and that’s important.”

Vasseur, who worked with Hamilton in F3 and GP2 at ASM and ART, sees him as an asset to find the missing performance: “I clearly remember Lewis in 2006 in GP2, where he was already like this, focusing on small details. Ultimately, if you look closely, I think the average gap between McLaren and us in qualifying is a few hundredths.”

“And that’s really where we are, as is the case with Red Bull and Mercedes. We’re talking about details across 100 aspects of the car. We truly need this mindset to chase the last thousandth in every area; I think Lewis will be a great asset for that as well.”
