Ferrari must 'pay close attention' to the tires in qualifying

Ferrari Eyes Tire Strategy to Boost Qualifying Form

02/10/2024

Carlos Sainz highlights Ferrari’s narrow tire window, stressing the need for precise management in qualifying to avoid losing performance and enhance their competitive edge in the final races.

Carlos Sainz has struggled more this year to understand the workings of the Ferrari, particularly in terms of tire management. In 2023, the Scuderia had a car that degraded the tires more, but this season’s car has a narrower performance window.

“This year’s trend is that we have a very narrow window for the tires on our car,” Sainz stated. “Last year, our car would get the tires working when we wanted. This year, the line seems to be very fine between getting them in the right window or not.”

“I’m trying to understand this on my side. I’ll focus over the next few weeks to see what I can do in the last six races to make it less of a limitation or weakness so we can be more competitive, because the race pace is still strong. So, there’s work to be done on that front.”

This narrower performance window is clearly an issue for qualifying, as seen in Singapore: “It’s clear that we have theories at the moment, but I think unless we get the perfect lap, the risk of not having the tires in the right window is extremely challenging for us.”

“And as soon as something happens outside of our control, like having to weave through traffic, having to slow down in sector 2, or queueing at the end of the pit lane, you’re a few degrees out of the operating window, and there’s no grip, which surprised me and probably surprised Charles at turn 1.”

“That doesn’t mean mistakes like the ones I made should happen, but at the same time, it shows we need to pay close attention to this. Hopefully, once we give it the attention it deserves, we can qualify higher and, with our race pace, be in the fight.”
