Russell: Rivals’ Errors Handed Verstappen the Title

23/12/2024

George Russell critiques Verstappen’s 2024 title, arguing rival teams had superior cars but failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

George Russell claims that Max Verstappen “probably shouldn’t have won the championship this year,” asserting that mistakes by others helped secure his fourth title.

The Briton does not dispute that the Red Bull driver is “exceptional” but explains that Verstappen couldn’t extract as much performance as he wanted from his RB20, which was inferior to its rivals.

“I’ve been in F1 for six years now; next year will be my seventh and my fourth year with the team.”

“I feel absolutely ready to step up to the next level and ready to fight for a championship. I feel ready to fight Max, and if we get the chance, I won’t waste it.”

“That said, you could argue that Max shouldn’t have won the championship this year, but others made a few more mistakes and didn’t capitalize when they had the chance. Ferrari and McLaren had a better F1 car than him.”

“From our side at Mercedes, I think we’ve taken every opportunity we could.”

“Opportunities don’t come around every day. This year, it was Lando’s chance. McLaren might be in contention again next year, but they might not. The same goes for Ferrari—what will happen with Lewis and Charles? Will they take too many points off each other, as happened with Charles and Carlos?”

“We just don’t know in this sport; nobody would have predicted Red Bull losing form the way they did.”

“There’s so much hype around Max. He’s an exceptional driver, but the fact is he’s only won one or two of the last 12 races, and that shows anyone can be beaten because you’re at the mercy of your race car.”

“The difference with him this year is that he won every time he had the chance, and his rivals didn’t.”
