Despite glimpses of pace, Ferrari couldn’t match rivals in tricky conditions. Leclerc remains puzzled as the team struggles to adapt.
Ferrari struggled in the first race of the 2025 season, leaving Charles Leclerc searching for answers after a tough weekend.
The Monegasque driver crossed the finish line in eighth place, while his new teammate, Lewis Hamilton, salvaged a single point in his debut race for the team.
The Grand Prix unfolded under unpredictable weather conditions. A brief switch to slick tires during a safety car period was quickly undone by another downpour in the closing laps.
Throughout the race, Ferrari simply couldn’t match the pace of McLaren and Red Bull, leaving Leclerc puzzled by the performance gap.
“We were close to the Mercedes ahead, but that was it. McLaren and Red Bull were just so much faster. We have a lot of work to do.”
The biggest frustration for Leclerc is Ferrari’s long-standing struggle in changing weather conditions.
“I don’t know why we’re still struggling, especially in these conditions.”
“This has been a weakness for years. Every time it rains, we experience highs and lows. We need to fix this.”
As the rain intensified towards the end of the race, Ferrari initially gambled on keeping both drivers out on slicks, hoping the conditions would stabilize. However, they were forced to pit in the final laps, costing them crucial points.
“It was a missed opportunity. In these kinds of conditions, when the pace is unpredictable, that’s when you need to capitalize. And we didn’t.”
“We weren’t fast enough at the start when the race was straightforward, and when it came to making the right call, we got it wrong.”
With a long season ahead, Ferrari faces a steep challenge to close the gap—especially if they want to take the fight to McLaren and Red Bull.
