Ferrari faces double heartbreak as Leclerc and Hamilton lose their points after separate technical infractions in the Chinese Grand Prix.
Ferrari has released an official statement shedding light on why both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified after today’s Chinese Grand Prix.
Both drivers originally finished in the points — Leclerc in P5, Hamilton in P6 — but were later stripped of their results following post-race technical checks. Interestingly, the reasons behind their disqualifications were not the same.
In Leclerc’s case, Ferrari says the car was found to be underweight by 1 kilogram, mainly due to heavier-than-expected tire wear. The team had opted for an unplanned one-stop strategy, which pushed the tires harder than intended and ultimately affected the car’s minimum weight.
Hamilton Out Over Floor Wear
For Hamilton, the issue was related to excessive wear on the wooden floor plank under his car — a component used to regulate ride height. According to Ferrari, the wear was just 0.5 millimeters beyond the allowed limit, caused by a miscalculation in setup.
“After the FIA’s routine post-race checks, both our cars were found to be non-compliant with regulations, though for different reasons,” Ferrari explained. “Charles’ car was 1kg underweight, largely due to tire degradation from the unexpected one-stop strategy. Lewis’ car had rear plank wear 0.5mm beyond the legal threshold, due to a slight underestimation in consumption.”
The team emphasized there was “no intention to gain any advantage” and said it is launching an internal review to understand what went wrong and prevent similar issues in the future.
“This is not how we wanted our Chinese Grand Prix weekend to end — not for us, and certainly not for our loyal fans. We deeply appreciate their continued support.”
