Vasseur: Every Tenth Counts in F1 Flex Wing Race

15/11/2024

Ferrari adjusts its approach as Fred Vasseur insists flexible wings could be key to gaining crucial hundredths in F1 competition.

Ferrari may have missed a technical innovation this season, but its boss, Fred Vasseur, believes F1’s flexible wings are not “a revolution.” However, his team must commit to this design path for the future.

The FIA stepped in to assess the flexing of front wings from several leading teams, using high-speed cameras to monitor the movement since July’s Belgian GP as the debate around flexible wings resurfaced.

The governing body concluded that the flexing was within the required limits. Vasseur believes Ferrari now needs to follow the path taken by rivals like McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship.

“Clearly, it’s not a revolution, but we are in a situation where every hundredth of a second matters,” he said.

“If you look at the sprint qualifying for the United States Grand Prix, we had two or three cars behind us by less than a tenth of a second.”

“If one detail or another gives us a hundredth of a second in performance, we have to do it.”

Vasseur also revealed that Ferrari was initially caught off guard by the FIA.

“There was frustration because at some point, we were waiting for a decision from the FIA when they installed the cameras,” he said.

“We were convinced it would be a ‘no go.’ But it turned out to be a ‘go!’ So we probably lost one or two months.”
