Alonso Eyes Long-Term Future with Aston Martin F1 Team

11/10/2024

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin’s F1 driver, remains committed to his motorsport journey, considering a long-term future with the team.

He is the longest-serving driver in F1 today: Fernando Alonso, the current Aston Martin F1 driver, might never have entered motorsport at all.

It’s often forgotten that sometimes all it takes is a small misstep for a driver to miss the final step to F1. To all the young drivers aspiring to climb to the elite level of the sport, Fernando Alonso has issued a warning: beware, the climb is steep.

“This is an incredibly tough sport. It’s so competitive and can sometimes be ruthless. It’s very difficult to spot talent: when someone is 10 or 11 years old, you can’t tell if they’ll make it to Formula 1.”

“The path to Formula 1 is long, it’s very complex, and you need a lot of support. You need financial backing and sponsors to move forward in the single-seaters.”

As for Alonso, he has at least one certainty: his career will have left a mark on F1 history. He is the most experienced driver, and his record for Grand Prix starts will only continue to grow over the next two years. Does he expect his name to remain in history forever?

“Things evolve, and what happened in the past is easily and quickly forgotten. It’s like all those Real Madrid players I idolized as a kid; now, when you look at the current Real Madrid team, they’re no longer there.”

“I’d like my name to stay a bit longer than most, but I know that’s going to be extremely difficult because we live in the present, not the past. Things move on. That’s just the nature of it.”

With Aston Martin F1 for many more years?

As for his own career, does Alonso know when it will end? Perhaps at the end of 2026, if the new Aston Martin F1 car developed by Adrian Newey doesn’t meet expectations? Does he see himself staying in F1 even after retiring as a driver?

“When I re-signed with the team earlier this year, the contract was about much more than just driving. It takes me through to the 2026 season and the new technical regulations in the sport. From there, we’ll see how many more years I can keep driving.”

“When I stop driving in Formula 1, I want to stay with the team so that everything I’ve learned, all my experience, everything I’ve been through in over 30 years of motorsport, continues and doesn’t fade away slowly over time.”

Alonso also notes that he will continue his museum and management activities for many years.

“There are things that will help me stay in the present, things that will help me remain in people’s minds a little longer. I have a kart brand in my name, the FA Alonso Kart, which is used in major world championships and by world karting champions; I created A14 Management to mentor and develop young promising talents; and I have the museum and karting track in Oviedo.”

“Then, if you have talent, if you start winning races, we try to develop and guide you. We now have kids who went through the karting school, who are moving up the ranks in motorsport. We have one competing in the Spanish Rally Championship, another one who will race in the Dakar next year, and Nikola Tsolov is now racing in F3. They’re all at different stages of their motorsport careers, but it all started at our karting school in Oviedo when they were about 10 years old.”
