F1's Ultimate Goal Keeps Schumacher on Hold

Schumacher to Stay as Mercedes Reserve in 2025

25/09/2024

Mick Schumacher eyes a continuing reserve role with Mercedes F1 in 2025, still aiming for a top race seat.

Mick Schumacher’s “Plan B” appears to involve remaining on the sidelines in Formula 1 as a reserve driver.

While serving as a reserve driver for Mercedes in Singapore, the German acknowledged that his “Plan A” was to sign as Nico Hulkenberg’s teammate at Sauber, owned by Audi, next year.

However, the German-Swiss collaboration seems set to keep Valtteri Bottas instead, while potentially grooming rookie Gabriel Bortoleto for a future racing role.

Schumacher, released by Haas after 2022, says he hasn’t given up on F1.

“Formula 1 remains the ultimate goal—it always has been, and it always will be. That’s why everything else must remain on hold for now.”

“The existing parallel options must wait.”

Now 25, Schumacher balances his role as a Mercedes reserve driver with a seat at Alpine in the World Endurance Championship.

“It’s important that my reserve driver duties and on-track work at Alpine go as smoothly as possible. It went very well at Fuji,” added Schumacher, referring to his recent first podium in the WEC.

Regarding his role at Mercedes F1, Mick says it happens “more behind the scenes, so you don’t see exactly what’s going on there.”

“But it’s going well there too. We’re all confident that I’ll continue to do it unless I get the last spot on the grid.”
