F1's Dicey Weekend Alonso Braces for Chaos

Alonso’s Gamble: Unpredictable Weather Shakes F1

08/06/2024

As unpredictable weather looms, Fernando Alonso describes the upcoming F1 weekend as a “constant gamble,” casting doubts even after a strong Friday performance.

Fernando Alonso was not very confident despite his first place in FP2. The Aston Martin F1 driver is concerned about unpredictable weather throughout the Canada Grand Prix weekend, which could turn the race into a lottery.

“I don’t have much to say, to be honest. It was a difficult Friday for everyone, few laps for everyone in FP1 and FP2, no real laps in the rain nor in the dry, we are in the middle of nowhere,” Alonso stated.

“But it could be the same in qualifying and the race, so it’s useful, we’ll need to analyse the data. We need to be sharp tomorrow because the right decision could gain you 5 seconds, and the wrong one could knock you out of the race.”

“It’s okay, it’s not perfectly clean, especially after the storm, it’s dusty. But at the same time, there is grip, the new tarmac is good and we need to test it in real wet conditions to see if there’s aquaplaning.”

“Besides that, it will be an interesting weekend for you, but for us, it will be a constant gamble, deciding which tyres to choose at which moment, and we’ll see if we can manage it.”

Lance Stroll was fairly positive despite an inactive day: “It was a bit of a slow day with the weather, we didn’t do many laps. FP2 allowed us to do some laps on intermediates then slicks on a drying track.”

“We learned some things, the new asphalt behaves differently, it was a good day. We worked on the setups, and on how the intermediate tyres behave as it was the first time we used them this year. I was comfortable in all conditions.”
