F1's 2026 Plan May Revive German Racing Circuits

F1’s 2026 Plan May Revive German Racing Circuits

11/04/2024

In 2026, Formula 1 may offer a vital lifeline to Germany’s iconic Hockenheim and Nurburgring circuits, sparking hope amid waning interest.

The two German circuits capable of hosting Formula 1 are hopeful that the sport will throw them a lifeline in 2026.

Currently, with auto racing funding and fan interest waning in the country, neither Hockenheim nor the Nurburgring are present on F1’s annually packed calendars.

However, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, quoted by the DPA news agency, hints that a potential solution could be on the horizon.

“By 2026, you’ll see something interesting. We’re in discussions with organizers in Europe to do something that will be announced soon.”

Without further details, Domenicali added: “There will be many Grands Prix, especially in Europe, where we have different options.”

It is believed that one of these options might be a new system in which two or more European events would alternate each year between unique racing slots.

Jorn Teske, the Hockenheim circuit boss, admits that this idea could revive the defunct German GP.

“We assume that Formula 1 is still interested in Germany as a market. We were, are, and remain in contact with Formula 1 and are always exploring joint possibilities.”

“We hold the rotation model in high regard because it has proven successful in the past with our colleagues at the Nürburgring.”

Nürburgring spokesperson Alexander Gerhard stated: “For us, the cornerstone is the economic viability of an event.”

“We will work together with the Hockenheimring.”
