F1 Veteran Perez Confronts Career End

Perez: I am aware that I am nearing the end of my Formula 1 career

08/09/2024

As Sergio Perez acknowledges the twilight of his F1 career, he describes it as a challenging yet fulfilling journey.

Sergio Perez is eager for Red Bull to secure additional titles before he concludes his Formula 1 career, though he acknowledges that he is “nearing the end.”

At 34, Perez ranks among the most seasoned drivers on the F1 grid with 273 starts under his belt. While his age might seem modest compared to the likes of 43-year-old Fernando Alonso and 39-year-old Lewis Hamilton, who continue to compete vigorously, Perez admits he is approaching retirement.

Yet, Perez is not ready to bow out just yet and has unfinished business in Formula 1. Although he hopes Red Bull will be his final team, having joined them for the 2021 season, Perez remains unsatisfied with the trophies he has amassed thus far.

Red Bull is contending to win a third consecutive constructors’ title in F1 in 2024, while Perez’s teammate, Max Verstappen, is aiming to clinch his fourth successive drivers’ championship.

“It’s truly challenging, but it’s worth it,” Perez told The Times regarding his commitment to F1 alongside his family life.

“I’ve fought my entire life to be here. I know I’m nearing the end of my career because I don’t want to do this for too much longer. There will come a time, I don’t know when, where I will simply have to say, ‘I can no longer continue leaving my family behind all the time.'”

“I want to finish my career here. I don’t know when, but this is a team that has given me everything, and I want to give them everything in return. Before that, I hope we can secure a few more championships.”
