Formula 1 is not ready to regulate the expanding use of artificial intelligence, which is already significantly enhancing performance for some leading teams.
As the explosive and ever-improving power of AI shakes the world, top F1 teams have quickly started using it to enhance their performance.
AI and machine learning now assist teams in designing their cars, developing race strategies, and making sense of the vast amounts of sensor data collected while the cars are on track.
It is believed that teams even use AI to analyze onboard footage of rival cars, according to Luca Bortolotti, a machine learning engineer at Ferrari.
“If our competitor takes the same corner at the same speed on the same trajectory with a slightly lower steering angle, it indicates they probably have a more aggressive balance than we do,” he said, giving just one example. “The possibilities are almost endless, and no one wants to reveal what they are currently capable of or will be capable of in the near or distant future.”

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali was asked if the sport should regulate AI to prevent teams already deploying it from gaining a huge advantage over their rivals. But…
“We already use artificial intelligence in our graphics, and the FIA uses it in active and passive safety systems,” the Italian responded.
“Now, we have promised to understand to what extent this can influence performance, as we do not yet know enough to intervene.”
