Lawson Mulls F1 Future Beyond Red Bull’s Nest

05/06/2024

Liam Lawson is rethinking his future with Red Bull, as F1 dynamics shift and other teams beckon daily.

Liam Lawson acknowledges that his spot within the Red Bull fold is not the most secure, now that Sergio Pérez has signed for another two years at Red Bull Racing, usually alongside Max Verstappen.

Depending on whether Yuki Tsunoda or Daniel Ricciardo leaves RB F1, the reserve driver for the two teams toughens his rhetoric and reveals he will not wait indefinitely for a drive in one of the two structures owned by Red Bull.

“I don’t have any idea—everything is changing right now, there are a lot of drivers moving around,” Lawson told Talksport. “At this moment, I don’t really know where I stand, or if I do at all. It’s something I’m working on every day right now.”

“I would love to be with Red Bull in F1. It’s the strongest team at the moment. I’ve been with them for six years now. If I could choose, I’d like to stay with Red Bull. But obviously, if there’s no room at Red Bull, my goal is F1. So it could be anywhere.”

Asked about having discussions with other teams, the New Zealander does not deny it: “It’s always being talked about. In F1, something changes every week. Everything changes very, very quickly. Things are very different from one weekend to the next.”

“We talk a lot, we manage it. I’m always trying to work out where I fit into the team for my future. I don’t want to be in F1 because someone is injured. I want to be in F1 because a team chooses to hire me full-time.”
