F1 Rules Firm Top 10 Points Cap Holds for 2026

F1 2026 Agenda: No Expanded Points System

23/07/2024

Today in London, the F1 Commission reaffirmed the points cap will remain for positions beyond the top 10 into 2026.

The third meeting of the Formula 1 Commission in 2024 took place today, July 23, at the Formula One Management offices in London.

The meeting was chaired by Nikolas Tombazis, FIA’s Single-Seater Director, and Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.

Here is an overview of the main discussion points and decisions:

Championship Points

It was unanimously agreed that there would be no change in the distribution of championship points (as described in Articles 6.4 and 6.5 of the Sporting Regulations) following a recent proposal to consider extending the allocation of points beyond 10th place in a Grand Prix.

Minimum Weight – Car and Driver

The minimum driver weight will be increased from 80 kg to 82 kg in the interest of driver welfare. Consequently, the minimum weight (the mass of the car, excluding fuel) will rise from 798 kg to 800 kg for 2025.

Pre-Season Testing for 2026

The 2026 pre-season testing plan would include nine days of testing, spread over three test events.

2026 Regulations

The general strategic objectives of the 2026 regulations were reiterated, specifying that the primary goal is to ensure fast and close racing that will continue to engage and excite fans. An update was provided on the 2026 regulation timeline covering technical, sporting, financial, and environmental issues, and that the ongoing collaboration led by the FIA with all teams was on track to meet objectives and heading in the right direction for the finalization of the regulations.

Following further discussions at upcoming meetings of the technical and sporting advisory committees, an update on the 2026 sporting and technical regulations will be presented to the World Motor Sport Council on October 17.

An extraordinary meeting of the F1 Commission will take place on October 2 to discuss issues related to 2026.

Financial Regulations

It was confirmed that costs related to maternity/paternity leave, sick leave, and team entertainments should remain excluded from the scope of the cost cap.
