During a Monza track recon, the F1 safety car crashed, leaving Maylander unharmed but the Aston Martin damaged.
The Italian Grand Prix weekend commenced on an unusual note for the FIA following a crash involving the F1 safety car during a reconnaissance lap on Thursday.
Traditionally, both the safety car and the medical car undertake laps around the circuit the day before on-track sessions begin, to test the timing systems for the upcoming weekend.
These laps also provide fans with circuit access an opportunity to witness the initial track activity, allowing drivers of these vehicles to familiarize themselves with the course.
This weekend, Aston Martin, alternating with Mercedes, supplied the safety cars, and the Vantage ended up embedded in the tyre barriers at the Parabolica (now also known as the Michele Alboreto curve)!
At the circuit’s final high-speed turn in Monza, Bernd Maylander lost control of the vehicle. He emerged unscathed, unlike the Aston whose front left was buried in the barriers.
Whether due to a driving error or mechanical failure, the FIA anticipates a swift resolution to the mystery.
