Could 2025 be a historic year for Formula 1? From Hamilton’s eighth title bid to Verstappen’s record chase, major milestones could be shattered.
Will 2025 be an unprecedented year in F1 history?
It just might be—under certain conditions. Here’s a look at the records that could be broken this year…
Most World Championships
Where else to begin?
Lewis Hamilton, last crowned champion in 2020, saw his eighth title slip away in 2021 during the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. To date, no driver has ever won eight F1 world titles, with Hamilton and Michael Schumacher both holding seven.
The Briton is already a legend in the sport. But if he were to surpass Schumacher’s seven titles by securing an eighth with Ferrari—and with a third different team—”legend” might not even be a strong enough word.
Notably, if Hamilton were to win in Australia on his Ferrari debut, he would join an elite group of world champions who also won their first race with the Scuderia, including Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen, Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti, and Juan Manuel Fangio.
Most Fastest Laps in a Race
Additionally, if Hamilton were to set more than ten fastest laps this year—a highly unlikely feat—he would surpass Michael Schumacher’s record for the most fastest laps in a race (77).
Last season, Hamilton recorded two fastest laps, bringing his career total to 67. With the fastest lap no longer awarding a bonus point, competition for this record may be less intense this year.
Youngest Grand Prix Winner Record
Kimi Antonelli has been chosen to succeed Hamilton at Mercedes. The youngest member of the 2025 rookie wave, the Italian will make his Formula 1 debut at just 18 years old.
If he manages to win one of the first three races of the season (Australia, China, or Japan), he will become the youngest driver to claim a Grand Prix victory, breaking the record held by Max Verstappen, who won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix at 18 years, 7 months, and 15 days.
Antonelli could also set the record for the youngest pole-sitter in history. Securing a pole position this season would erase Sebastian Vettel’s mark from the record books.
On paper, in a Mercedes F1 car, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has the tools to make it happen.
Most Podiums by a Rookie
During his debut Formula 1 season in 2007, Lewis Hamilton secured 12 podiums with McLaren, immediately fighting for the title against Kimi Räikkönen and Fernando Alonso.
It is rare for a rookie to have the opportunity to contend for top positions from the outset. Yet, two drivers could achieve this feat in 2025: Liam Lawson, who already has 11 Grand Prix starts and will contest his first full season with Red Bull alongside Verstappen, and Kimi Antonelli, who can rely on Mercedes to push him to the front.
With 24 races on the calendar, they would need to finish in the top three in more than half the events to surpass Hamilton and claim the record. Difficult, but not impossible.
Most Wins with a Single Team Record
Verstappen could make history by becoming the driver with the most victories for a single team—but to achieve this, he would need to dominate the 2025 season.
Currently, the Dutchman has 63 wins with Red Bull, placing him third on the all-time list for most victories with one constructor. Ahead of him, Michael Schumacher recorded 72 wins with Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton holds the record with 84 victories for Mercedes.
To surpass Hamilton, Verstappen would need to claim 22 wins this season—an achievement that would also see him break his own record of 19 wins in a single year, the best performance ever by a driver.
However, this scenario seems unlikely, as Verstappen won only twice in the final 14 races of the 2024 season.
Most Consecutive Titles Record
This record cannot be broken in 2025, but it can be equaled. If Verstappen secures a fifth consecutive title, he will join Michael Schumacher as the only driver to have won five championships in a row.
Such an achievement would also make Verstappen only the fourth driver in history to reach or surpass five Formula 1 world titles, joining Hamilton, Schumacher, and Fangio.
