Safety protocols may halt the Miami GP if storms strike Hard Rock Stadium. Organisers and the FIA are ready to act fast.

When it comes to weather in Miami, Formula 1 isn’t taking any chances. Race organizers have confirmed that clear protocols are in place to suspend the Miami Grand Prix if storm risks emerge.

Earlier today, the second race of the F1 Academy was canceled due to a soaked track. The sun later returned, and conditions remained dry and clear at the Hard Rock Stadium, just one hour before the Grand Prix was set to begin.

Still, rain showers and even thunderstorms are expected later in the day. In response, the FIA has outlined how the situation will be handled if the weather turns dangerous.

According to an official statement from the stewards, citing Articles 11.9.2.a and 11.9.3.n of the FIA International Sporting Code, safety is the top priority. If there is a threat of lightning or storms near the circuit, the race may be suspended to allow staff and spectators to seek shelter.

In that case, the following procedures will take place:

The race will be paused under Article 57 of the Sporting Regulations. All cars must return to the pit lane and stop in the fast lane as specified in Article 57.2.

Once all vehicles are in place, teams will receive an official message instructing them to push the cars back into their garages. Until further notice, garage doors must remain open.

To keep everything fair, any car already in the garage when the suspension begins, or moved from the fast lane too early, will be placed at the back of the queue when the race restarts, following Articles 57.3 or 57.5.

The message is clear from the FIA. Racing will continue only if conditions are safe. In Miami, the storm might not just be on the track.
