Franz Tost slams F1 employees complaining about a 24-race season, calling their concerns “a joke” and insisting the sport is a privilege.
Franz Tost was never the best friend of engineers and mechanics in F1, but even in retirement, the former Toro Rosso team principal—now Racing Bulls—has taken aim at employees complaining about the workload of a Formula 1 season.
As more voices have spoken out against a 24-race calendar, including drivers like Max Verstappen, the Austrian still believes “these complaints are a joke.”
“I think 24 races are absolutely fine.”
“People always say mechanics are overworked. That’s a complete joke. They are not overworked at all.”
Tost recalled his early years in F1, emphasizing that staff schedules were even busier back then.
“We had races on the weekend, and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we did testing.”
“In the beginning, we even had two cars. And it was always the same technicians and engineers. I never heard a single complaint from them back then.”
“Now, there’s a curfew in Formula 1, which means everything stops at 9 p.m. in the evening until 8 a.m. the next morning.”
“For heaven’s sake, what more do they want? Working in Formula 1 is a privilege.”
“All this work-life balance, all this nonsense, it’s totally unnecessary. You don’t need something like that. That’s for people who are too lazy to work.”
