F1 Drivers Push to Keep Jeddah on the Calendar

"Could Jeddah Keep its F1 Spot Alongside Qiddiya?

F1 drivers are eager to see Jeddah remain on the calendar, even with the exciting prospects of Saudi Arabia’s new Qiddiya circuit.

This marks the fifth time Saudi Arabia has hosted a Formula 1 race, and once again, it’s taking place at the Jeddah circuit. Although the country’s Qiddiya project is still in the works (you can read more about it here), Saudi Arabia believes it could follow in the footsteps of other nations with two Grand Prix events.

But would the drivers be on board with keeping Jeddah on the calendar?

“It would be interesting! I’ve also seen the layout of the new track, and it looks just as impressive,” says Alex Albon.

“Jeddah is a unique circuit, and I love it. I think it’s one of the most exciting tracks for us. In qualifying, it’s the one that really gets the adrenaline pumping, and I think all the drivers would probably say the same. That said, the new track looks pretty extreme. So yeah, I’d be sad if Jeddah was removed, but we’ll see what happens.”

Oliver Bearman, who made his F1 debut at Jeddah last year for Ferrari in place of Carlos Sainz, also shares a fondness for the circuit.

“I personally really enjoy driving on this track. And of course, it’s a special one for me too, since it’s where I made my F1 debut. But yeah, driving here – the asphalt is great, and the layout is fantastic. It makes for some really intense qualifying sessions. I remember the 2021 qualifying – it was so exciting. And yeah, as drivers, we all agree: it’s a really fun track to drive on.”

“But I’ve also seen that the new one is built over 20 stories or something like that – there are always crazy things happening here, with amazing tracks and concepts. I hope Jeddah doesn’t disappear, but I’m sure that if it is replaced, it’ll be an awesome replacement.”

In conclusion, while the new Qiddiya circuit might be on the horizon, Jeddah still holds a special place in the hearts of many drivers, who appreciate both its thrill and unique challenge.
