Amid political turmoil, Thailand’s F1 future dims as the Prime Minister steps down.

Thailand’s Hopes of Becoming a New Formula 1 Venue Dealt a Blow

Thailand’s aspiration to join the Formula 1 circuit appears to have suffered a setback.

In April, amid speculation of a potential street race in Bangkok, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali visited the Southeast Asian nation to meet with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

At the time, Thavisin was in Imola for further discussions with Formula 1 officials, where he stated that “his policy is to place Thailand on the global map for international events and activities.”

The Prime Minister’s visit caused significant anxiety for Angelo Sticchi Damiani, the head of ACI, representing both Imola and Monza circuits.

“We are in a context where everything changes rapidly,” he said, expressing concern that one of the Italian races might fall victim to a deal with Thailand. “The Prime Minister of an Asian country wanting F1 was present at Imola.”

However, the situation has now changed. Just days ago, Thavisin was compelled by the Thai Constitutional Court to resign after he appointed a minister found guilty of corruption.

According to 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, the potential failure of Thailand’s bid for F1 is not a disaster, as he believes another region in the world deserves a Grand Prix more.

“F1 is more global than ever, and Africa is a missing continent. Thus, it makes sense that there’s a desire to go to Africa. Honestly, the next F1 destination is also a very political question.”
