McLaren F1 : The Full Story of Their 2024 F1 Season

19/12/2024

McLaren’s resurgence in 2024 delivered a Constructors’ Championship, key victories, and the promise of sustained F1 dominance for years ahead.

McLaren’s 2024 Formula 1 campaign marked a triumphant return to the top, securing the Constructors’ Championship—the team’s first since 1998. Lando Norris finished as runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship behind Max Verstappen, with both Norris and Oscar Piastri claiming their maiden F1 victories.

The season began with a slight step back compared to the end of 2023, as the MCL38 struggled to contend for podiums. In the first five races, Norris and Piastri managed several strong finishes, though podium appearances were scarce.

A major upgrade package debuted in Miami, where Norris clinched his first win of the season, aided by a fortunate Safety Car intervention. From that point, the Norris-Verstappen duel unfolded race by race.

The McLaren and its British driver proved particularly strong in the latter stages of races, benefiting from superior tire management. However, during the first half of the European tour, the RB20 and MCL38 were evenly matched.

Norris missed a potential win in Austria after a collision but rebounded as McLaren secured a one-two finish in Hungary, with Piastri claiming his first victory. Minor tensions arose between the teammates but were effectively managed to avoid escalation.

Toward the end of the season, the McLaren emerged as the most consistent car on the grid. This allowed Norris to claim victories in Zandvoort, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi. Both the driver and the team faced the challenges of competing for a world title, testing their strategic, operational, and on-track skills.

Piastri took his second win in Baku, where Norris struggled in qualifying but McLaren delivered the strongest performance overall. After overtaking Red Bull in the standings, and fending off a late-season surge from Ferrari, the team secured their first Constructors’ title in 26 years.
