Max Verstappen clinched his fourth title, showcasing dominance, resilience, and strategic brilliance in a season where rivals closed the gap.
When examining Max Verstappen’s four titles, it’s reasonable to consider his 2024 crown as the most deserved. The 2023 title was near perfection, but the Red Bull driver demonstrated remarkable resilience in a 2024 season that saw his rivals close in on his team.
With four wins in the first five races of the season, Verstappen appeared poised to dominate 2024 much like the previous year, when he won 19 of the 22 races.
Only a mechanical failure in Australia cast doubt on Red Bull and the Dutchman’s ability to maintain such a high level throughout the season. However, he still seemed fully in control of his destiny.
In Miami, Red Bull faced its first warning with strong performances from McLaren F1 and Lando Norris’s maiden victory. Yet, the strategic component behind the Briton’s win offered reassurance to the reigning champions.
Winning three of the next four races, with a sixth place in Monaco as the sole blemish, further confirmed the strength of the RB20 and Verstappen’s consistently impressive performance.
However, over the course of the season, McLaren became an increasingly significant threat to Red Bull, and Verstappen’s victories grew narrower. Worse was yet to come for the championship leader.
From Austria, where he intentionally tangled with Norris, Verstappen faced growing challenges, as McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes shared the next ten victories.
After achieving a streak of ten consecutive wins in 2023, Verstappen endured a similarly long drought in 2024, with three teams rising in turn to challenge him at the top level.
Despite a few moments of frustration in his driving—unnecessary given his skill—Verstappen managed to settle for intermediate results that secured the points needed to fend off Norris, who had become his only rival for the title.
A distant rival, Norris never posed a serious threat, as Verstappen consistently minimized losses—or better. However, the situation became more challenging for Red Bull, with Sergio Pérez absent from the front-running group as early as May.
Verstappen also found his way back to victory in Brazil, delivering one of the finest performances of his career. In Qatar, freed from the pressure of the world title he had secured earlier in Las Vegas, he claimed his ninth win of the 2024 season.
A reliable pillar for Red Bull, Verstappen must now hope that the absence of Adrian Newey and key figures like Jonathan Wheatley won’t affect the team in 2025. Alongside Liam Lawson, he will aim to close out this regulatory cycle with another title, which would ensure his undefeated run during this period.
