Kevin Magnussen reflects on a challenging 2024 season, marking his F1 exit as Haas shows its strongest form in years.
The comparison with Nico Hülkenberg had already been challenging for Kevin Magnussen last year, one season after his triumphant return to Haas F1 at the start of 2022. However, in 2024, the Dane struggled even more as the team showed significant improvement.
Haas’s progress during the 2024 season was remarkable, largely credited to its new team principal, Ayao Komatsu. Unfortunately for Magnussen, these advances did not translate into better results for him.
It took him until the 19th race of the season to reach his first Q3, while Hülkenberg managed six in the first half of the season and two more before Magnussen finally made it.
In races, Magnussen fared slightly better, scoring points relatively early in the season, but he still ended up with less than half the points Hülkenberg achieved.
Tasked multiple times with heroically defending his teammate, sometimes using questionable on-track tactics, Magnussen played the team role to perfection, often sacrificing himself at the cost of penalties.
He became the first driver to be suspended after reaching the maximum points on his license, forcing him to miss the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Oliver Bearman performed closer to Hülkenberg than Magnussen had.
In Brazil, Magnussen was unwell and missed a second Grand Prix. Despite finishing the season with some strong performances, including a fastest lap in Abu Dhabi gifted by Haas, his season was ultimately very disappointing.
However, he is at peace with leaving the top tier, recognizing that his return in 2022 was already an unexpected second chance. Magnussen now turns to endurance racing, having signed with BMW.
