Fernando Alonso displayed his resilience in 2024, excelling despite Aston Martin’s struggles with an underperforming car throughout the season.
After a standout 2023 season with eight podiums and a fourth-place finish in the championship, Fernando Alonso knew 2024 would likely prove more challenging for Aston Martin F1, given a car that steadily regressed in the hierarchy as development progressed.
Unfortunately, the just-concluded season only confirmed that the Silverstone-based team struggles to steer its single-seater in the right direction.
Things started relatively well, thanks to the AMR24’s impressive qualifying pace during the opening Grands Prix.
However, in race conditions, Aston Martin F1 was clearly the fifth-strongest team on the grid, unable to consistently challenge the top four teams.
Alonso secured fifth place—and his best result of the season—in Saudi Arabia, later impressing with a third-place qualifying effort in China before slipping back the following day.
The best of the rest in the drivers’ standings behind the untouchable top eight, Alonso endured a difficult second quarter of the season.
He wrestled with a car that became increasingly uncompetitive and tricky to handle as the championship progressed.
Lance Stroll, meanwhile, appeared more comfortable with the car during this phase, raising questions about how far the patience of the two-time world champion would be tested before the campaign’s end.
Alonso found renewed form in the second half of the championship, frequently reaching Q3 and scoring points consistently.
However, his team faltered again due to another failed development cycle, leaving the Spaniard striving to shine in a car that fluctuated between the sixth and ninth-best on the grid, depending on the circuit.
He nevertheless regained a clear upper hand over a lackluster Lance Stroll.
Following a run of four Grands Prix without scoring, the 43-year-old finished the year strongly with points in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
This secured him ninth in the championship, comfortably ahead of the rest of the midfield but far, far behind the drivers who contested victories in 2024.
On a personal level, Alonso demonstrated his usual reliability in an underwhelming car, despite a dip in form where he was overshadowed by Stroll. Yet, it was clear that frustration lingered throughout the season.
With stable regulations and Aston Martin F1 struggling to improve its current car, the chances of a turnaround next season appear slim.
Alonso is likely already looking forward to 2026, when the narrative could shift dramatically with the introduction of new regulations, the recruitment of Adrian Newey and Enrico Cardile, and the full implementation of the team’s upgraded infrastructure in Silverstone.
