Daniel Ricciardo’s 2024 season marked his ultimate F1 challenge, as hopes of redemption faded into an unexpected career-ending chapter.
Daniel Ricciardo’s 2024 Formula 1 season was one of high stakes, but also a final opportunity to return to Red Bull. Signed by RB F1 after a solid end to 2023 with AlphaTauri, he clearly aimed to prove he still had the caliber for a top team.
From the start of the season, Ricciardo’s performances fell short of expectations. At the Bahrain Grand Prix, he qualified 14th and finished 13th. The following races showed no notable improvement, with frequent qualifications outside the top 10 and finishes outside the points.
At the Japanese Grand Prix, Ricciardo was involved in a first-lap collision, resulting in his retirement. This was followed by another collision at the Chinese Grand Prix, where Lance Stroll hit him during a safety car period, causing yet another retirement.
These incidents were tough to endure, especially as he struggled against Yuki Tsunoda, who consistently outperformed him in qualifying, showcasing a clear advantage over the experienced Australian.
Nevertheless, some glimmers of hope remained. At the Miami Grand Prix, Ricciardo managed to qualify fourth for the sprint race, finishing in the same position and securing his first points of the season.
His performance at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, where he reached Q3 and secured ninth on the grid, stood out as a positive highlight. Unfortunately, a poor start in the race saw him drop back, leaving him without points.
Qualifying fifth in Canada and within the top 10 in Hungary, he scored points on three occasions. However, these results fell short of the team’s expectations, particularly those of Red Bull.
By the Singapore Grand Prix, it became evident that he was facing his final moments as a full-time driver, although Red Bull and RB F1 did not allow an open announcement. A few days later, the decision was made, and he was replaced by Liam Lawson for the final six races.
