Alex Albon delivered consistency in 2024, but rising competition at Williams signals tougher tests ahead for the Thai driver.
Albon has been Williams F1’s steady hand since 2022, a dependable asset for a team that often needed timely performances. In 2024, this remained true, but his position appeared slightly less secure, relatively speaking.
The first half of the season didn’t demand his utmost effort, even though the Thai driver is known for his relentless work ethic, as he faced a Logan Sargeant struggling more than ever.
Early in the season, Albon finished twice just outside the points, but it was in Monaco that he broke into the top 10 for the first time, both in qualifying and the race. He also scored points at Silverstone with another ninth-place finish, but his standout performance came in Baku, where he secured seventh place.
Beaten in qualifying by his young teammate Franco Colapinto, who was contesting only his second Grand Prix, Albon responded well in the race, finishing ahead of the sister car.
The latter part of the season wasn’t poor for him, but for the first time—after Sargeant and Nicholas Latifi—he had a teammate come this close to matching his lap times, a sign that his leadership role might not be as unshakable as before.
Fortunately, Albon’s dedication and work ethic always ensure he remains highly regarded within his team, where his leadership is carefully maintained.
His season could have been more positive if not for three consecutive retirements during the American rounds, two of which occurred on the first lap. Notably, he completed the fewest laps of any driver to race the entire season.
However, the most glaring downside of his year was the number of accidents, which is too high for a driver of his experience. In Australia, he caused his teammate’s retirement, and his struggles with rain in Brazil were particularly frustrating.
In 2025, Albon faces a tough challenge in the form of a new teammate, Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard, arriving from Ferrari, brings significant technical expertise and invaluable experience from working with a top-tier team.
Combined with his natural speed, Sainz will undoubtedly be a formidable rival for Albon. While the latter hasn’t faced significant threats to his position so far, there’s no doubt that the upcoming season will be one of great challenges for him.
