Former AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost questions Audi’s F1 strategy, criticizing teams for overlooking Mick Schumacher’s proven talent and experience.
Franz Tost, who led Toro Rosso and AlphaTauri from 2006 to 2023, is not convinced that the massive influx of young drivers is beneficial for teams. He mainly references the Brazilian race regarding Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto, and the junior categories for Gabriel Bortoleto.
“Oliver Bearman frequently went off track and seemed overwhelmed. And Franco Colapinto had two serious crashes. This cost Williams millions. Politically, it would also be an extremely unfortunate decision,” Tost asserts.
According to the Austrian, teams were wrong to overlook Mick Schumacher, and he praises the German’s progress and maturity: “Mick is still young and has won both key junior categories, which Bortoleto has not yet achieved.”
“Moreover, he is very fast and consistently improved over his two years with Haas. And now, in his role as a test driver, he has extensive experience with current Formula 1 cars.”
Not only critical of young drivers, Tost believes Sauber should have prioritized Schumacher over Nico Hülkenberg for the Audi F1 project: “In my opinion, he no longer has a place in Formula 1. They would be better off giving a chance to a young German like Mick Schumacher.”
