Ecclestone: Hamilton’s Ferrari Move Driven by Elkann’s Ego Trip

10/11/2024

Bernie Ecclestone doubts Lewis Hamilton’s chances of an eighth title at Ferrari, calling his recruitment an ego-driven decision by Elkann.

Bernie Ecclestone doesn’t see Lewis Hamilton claiming an eighth world title with Ferrari. The former F1 chief is convinced that the Briton will face tough competition from Charles Leclerc, who is already established in the team, though he understands Hamilton’s desire to leave Mercedes F1.

“I don’t think he’ll get it,” Ecclestone told the Daily Mail. “I don’t think it will be easy for Lewis, especially in that team. They will back Charles Leclerc. He’s fast and has grown with the team. They won’t replace him with anyone else.”

“However, from Lewis’s perspective, it may not have been a mistake to join Ferrari. He could no longer thrive at Mercedes. Either he gave up on them, or they gave up on him. They wouldn’t have done much to keep him, so it’s better for him to leave.”

The billionaire believes Ferrari’s CEO might feel disappointed to see Hamilton struggling somewhat, especially with his challenging end to the season at Mercedes. However, he doesn’t think Hamilton would consider backing out of his move to the Scuderia.

“He would have to forfeit a lot financially. It’s a big contract he’s secured, though I suspect the bonus clauses in his deal are there to boost morale rather than reflect reality.”

“For John Elkann, the CEO, it was a matter of ego. He believed he had captured the best driver the world has ever seen. When he signed him, there was no reason to doubt his assessment.”

“As for whether he’s still satisfied, that’s another question. Only time will tell. If Lewis weakens, which I hate to see, he should move on and excel in a new area.”
