Jack Doohan expresses support for Liam Lawson, acknowledging the difficulties he faces following his departure from Red Bull mid-season.
As Jack Doohan arrived at the Suzuka paddock today in Japan, he was asked about the current situation of Liam Lawson.
The Alpine F1 driver, who is reportedly under pressure from Flavio Briatore to perform, is seen by many as potentially facing a similar fate to Lawson—being replaced mid-season. However, unlike Red Bull, Alpine does not have a sister team for the Australian driver.
Doohan Backs Lawson, Sees Potential
Doohan expressed sympathy for Lawson after his demotion, acknowledging that Lawson’s departure from Red Bull is concerning. However, he believes that Lawson will perform better with the sister team, Racing Bulls, given the challenges with the RB21.
“Honestly, it’s hard to predict. I feel for him, but he’s still in Formula 1. I had rumors myself that I wouldn’t even get a seat before I did,” Doohan shared.
“He’s an extremely talented driver. For whatever reason, he’s had a tough time, but again, it’s only been two races, so it’s unfortunate. But, to be honest, I think he’ll be a bigger threat at Racing Bulls than he might have been at Red Bull.”
Red Bull insisted that Lawson’s return to Racing Bulls was due to the team needing Tsunoda’s experience to help improve the car.
“Yes, it’s a ruthless sport, and especially in this context, I don’t want to go too deep into it, especially in a top team. But yes, that’s Formula 1,” Doohan remarked.
“It’s a business, and results and performance are key. He was in a very delicate situation, and we all know how difficult that Red Bull is to drive, so I won’t go any further.”
