Jack Doohan lost his cool in Miami after a team error ruined his final lap chance during Sprint qualifying on Friday.
It was a frustrating day for Alpine F1 in Miami. Pierre Gasly qualified 12th for the Sprint race and isn’t feeling confident about scoring points in Saturday’s 100-kilometer dash. The Frenchman doubts he’ll be able to climb into the top eight, which is required to earn points.
“This morning was tricky,” Gasly admitted. “We made good progress in qualifying and managed to get things working better. There are still things we could have done differently, but overall, it was a step forward from earlier today. Sprint weekends are always tough. We improved, but we need to do more. Scoring will be hard, but we have to aim higher for Sunday.”
On the other side of the garage, tempers flared. Jack Doohan was furious after being knocked out in SQ1. The Australian, who rarely shows such emotion, exploded over team radio when his session was compromised by a team decision that prioritized Gasly’s car exiting the garage first.
“This is not acceptable! If you send him out ahead of me, you have to make sure he’s ready,” Doohan shouted. “I had to hit the brakes because he almost ran into me. That ruined my lap and knocked me out. It’s a joke!”
After qualifying, Doohan was still clearly upset.
“It all came down to that final push lap,” he explained. “The car felt good, but I was blocked coming out of the pits. It was a mistake caused by the other car, and I never got a clean second run. I didn’t even get the chance to put in another timed lap.”
He added that his first lap was challenging, as he tried a few changes based on what he learned in free practice. “It wasn’t a bad lap, but I knew the car had more in it for the second run. Unfortunately, we’ll never know what could’ve been.”
