Domenicali Teases Bold 2026 Calendar Changes for F1 Fans

F1 Set to Rotate European Races in Major 2026 Shake-Up

08/11/2024

Formula 1 plans a rotating schedule for European circuits in 2026, aiming to boost the sport’s appeal and streamline the race calendar.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, recently disclosed that the sport will reveal “very soon” details of a European Grand Prix rotation project set for 2026. This initiative could reshape the calendar and enhance the appeal of European races.

While many Grands Prix now have long-term contracts—some extending into the 2030s—several European events with contracts expiring in 2025 have yet to be renewed. A rotation system, allowing iconic circuits like Spa and Zandvoort to alternate, has been discussed for some time. Imola’s future remains uncertain, while Barcelona, with Madrid joining the calendar in 2026, could also join this rotation system.

“As you know, Madrid will join the calendar in 2026. The majority of our circuits hold long-term agreements, giving us a solid foundation to consistently improve the quality of our offer and ensure an exceptional experience for our fans,” Domenicali explained.

Domenicali promised imminent announcements on the future of European Grands Prix and new options to diversify races. “We have strong demand from new sites wishing to host F1. Our choices will account not only for economic benefits but also for the growth of strategic markets to expand our sport.”

He welcomes the current luxury of selecting from high-quality projects, a stark contrast from just a few years ago.

Despite this interest, Domenicali confirmed the race count would remain stable at 24 per season, deeming this number “a perfect balance.” He also specified that new circuit choices will not be solely driven by financial offers but by social, sporting, and commercial impact.

Regarding the next Concorde Agreement, which governs the sport’s financial and commercial aspects, Domenicali emphasized there is no rush to sign a new deal before its expiration at the end of 2025. “We still have time under the current agreement. Discussions are positive and progressing well. The stability of F1’s ecosystem ensures solid financial security for the coming years.”

Domenicali concluded by affirming that F1 is preparing a strong strategy for 2026 and beyond, with concrete announcements to follow in due course.
