F1 CEO Domenicali unveils a new rookie-focused sprint race for the season’s conclusion.
Plans are underway for a special sprint race for young drivers following the Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali spoke with Italian journalists ahead of the Italian GP, where Ferrari is favored.
“Ferrari as a protagonist is certainly a very important factor for F1,” said the Italian.
“However, in the years of (Max) Verstappen’s dominance, interest in F1 has not diminished at all.”
“More and more countries want a GP, and we are also in discussions with Africa – with Rwanda. We were Eurocentric, now Europe represents about a third of the world championship. But we will remain at 24 Grands Prix.”
“In the coming years, there will be room to increase the number of sprint races, and we are discussing the possibility of doing so like MotoGP in the future – with all races featuring sprints.”
For the now traditional post-season test in Abu Dhabi, held in the days following the official world championship finale, there should be a change.
“In Abu Dhabi, during the tests, we may organize a sprint race for the youngsters. We are opening many frontiers and there are a lot of young people following us, to the point that we have started making merchandise for children and women.”
“Such growth was not taken for granted, especially after Covid which could have ended the world championship.”
When asked for specifics about what is planned for Yas Marina, Domenicali adds:
“There is a project on the table, it still needs to pass the F1 Commission stage.”
“We are thinking globally about how to give young people the opportunity to shine and gain experience. And at the Yas Marina test, we are considering doing this not only by driving during the test but also in a competitive context.”
“This would certainly help their training, aiming to prepare them for the next step. We will discuss this in detail by the end of September to understand the feasibility of this idea.”
