George Russell isn’t chasing headlines—he’s chasing performance, as the Mercedes star quietly delivers one of his best seasons yet.
Despite a strong and consistent start to the season, George Russell isn’t losing sleep over not being labeled a title contender for 2025.
The Mercedes driver has already claimed three podiums in the opening rounds and currently sits fourth in the championship, just 14 points behind Lando Norris. But when the conversation turns to title favorites, names like Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri are front and center—Russell’s often isn’t.
Still, that doesn’t seem to faze him.
“Every weekend I go out there just trying to give my best,” Russell said. “The last three seasons, racing alongside Lewis [Hamilton], his name was always part of the conversation. He’s the GOAT, after all. But neither of us were in the fight—we just didn’t have the car for it.”
Now, heading into the heart of 2025, Russell feels Mercedes has made a strong start.
“It’s been a really solid beginning to the season. I don’t think we could’ve asked for much more from the first four races. Hopefully, we can keep that momentum going. McLaren’s looking incredibly strong though, and even Max is going to have a tough time keeping up with them.”
He knows things can change quickly in Formula 1.
“Red Bull was dominating last year, and then suddenly, things shifted. So yes, this sport moves fast.”
And when asked if it bothers him to be overlooked in the title talk?
“Honestly, not at all. I’m living my dream—I’m a Formula 1 driver. That’s not just a feeling, that’s reality. If we want to fight for the championship, we need to step it up.”
Russell says he’s proud of his performances so far, not just this year but over the past few seasons.
“I’ve had one of the toughest teammates in the history of the sport. I don’t need outside validation. I just want to go out, race hard every weekend, and do my job. If success comes from that, it comes.”
