De la Rosa Alonso's Life Is F1

De la Rosa: “Alonso’s Life Is F1”

14/04/2024

Pedro de la Rosa confirms that for Fernando Alonso, Formula 1 isn’t just a career—it’s a way of life, underscoring his deep commitment to the sport.

Fernando Alonso’s decision to continue racing rather than choosing a team highlights his commitment to F1. The champion re-signed with Aston Martin, extending his storied career.

Fernando Alonso’s only doubt about staying in F1 in 2025 was whether he wanted to continue racing, not which team he would drive for.

This is the belief of Aston Martin’s ambassador, Pedro de la Rosa, who revealed that Alonso’s new contract was settled “very quickly” after the two-time world champion decided he wanted to continue.

Although he was linked to vacant seats at Mercedes and Red Bull, Alonso committed his future to Aston Martin on Thursday by signing a new multi-year contract.

The agreement will take him at least until the end of the 2026 season, the 20th anniversary of his second title with Renault, with Alonso set to turn 45 that year.

De la Rosa—who has previously worked closely with Alonso at McLaren and Ferrari—stated that Alonso’s doubts were solely about his desire to stay on the grid—and not about pursuing opportunities with rival teams.

“I think one thing that is very important is the fact that Fernando has always kept his word.”

“At the start of the season, he was unsure about wanting to continue in Formula 1 for an additional year in 2025 and he said: ‘I need a little time to think about it and reflect on how I progress over the year. And then when I’m ready, I will let you know.’ He kept his word.”

“When he realized that his energy level was high enough and he wanted to commit more to Formula 1, he simply said: ‘I want to continue with Aston Martin.'”

“So I think the question was really not with which team, but whether he wanted to continue in F1. The level of intensity with which he approaches the sport is very critical for him.”

“The real question on the table was whether Fernando wanted to continue in F1.”

“Everyone was talking about other teams or moves after Lewis [Hamilton] decided to join Ferrari for 2025, but the reality within our team and with Fernando was always that.”

“The only question he needed to answer was: ‘Do I want to continue in F1 and still have this level of commitment?’ That was the question and once it was answered, I think the deal was concluded very quickly.”

“The reason why the team and Fernando wanted to communicate so quickly was mainly because we had an interesting project on the table. Why should we hide it from the world?”
