Wolff Speaks on d’Ambrosio’s Future Amid Ferrari Rumors

16/03/2024

Toto Wolff addresses speculations about Jérôme d’Ambrosio potentially leaving Mercedes, citing personal reasons behind the Belgian’s contemplation.

Wolff addresses questions regarding Jérôme d’Ambrosio at Mercedes: he cites “personal reasons” for the Belgian’s contemplation of his future.

Is Jérôme d’Ambrosio poised to leave Mercedes for Ferrari? This rumor has been swirling in the paddock for several days, and Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, has commented on his close associate’s situation.

Wolff reminded that d’Ambrosio remains with the German squad for now. However, the Silver Arrows’ director hinted at “personal reasons” prompting the Belgian to consider his future.

“It’s up to him to discuss,” Wolff stated, while ensuring that a “good atmosphere” still prevails within the team. “We’ll see where it leads us,” he added, according to remarks reported by Crash.net.

This uncertain situation could be due to d’Ambrosio’s contract ending at the year’s close. Some sources suggest the 38-year-old former driver wishes to return to Europe.

It’s worth noting d’Ambrosio’s significant role at Mercedes in recent years. Joining in 2022, he notably filled in for Wolff as team principal during the Japanese and Qatar Grands Prix in 2023. His contributions have also extended to the development of young drivers, a crucial area for the Silver Arrows squad.

A move to Ferrari, therefore, cannot be ruled out, especially since d’Ambrosio is no stranger to the Scuderia’s circle. Before joining Mercedes, he worked alongside Susie Wolff, Toto’s wife, at the Venturi Formula E team.

His F1 driving career was relatively short-lived. Starting in 2011 with Virgin Racing, it concluded at the 2012 Italian Grand Prix, where he replaced Romain Grosjean, who was serving a suspension.

Whether d’Ambrosio’s journey with Mercedes will end soon remains to be seen. The answer will likely come from the driver himself in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Toto Wolff remains circumspect, keeping the speculation alive.
