Perez Defiant: ‘I Haven’t Forgotten How to Drive’

28/07/2024

Perez asserts his skill amidst a critical rebound, questioning if timing could be his ally.

Sergio Perez recorded his best qualifying result since China at Spa, a significant achievement as the Red Bull driver appears to be playing for his future in F1 in the coming days.

Does this satisfy the Mexican in light of the criticism he has received and Red Bull’s statement that they wanted to hold discussions during the summer break?

“From my perspective, it changes nothing. You know, I’ve always said that it’s not where we are now that matters, but how we ride the waves and where we finish in Abu Dhabi.”

“I mean, there are many drivers who have not been able to maximise their performances lately, but obviously, the scrutiny on my side has been much tighter. It doesn’t change anything from my point of view.”

“The race is a new opportunity. It would have been the same if I had been eliminated in Q2, it was close. The race is a new chance to do better. And that’s how I see it. It’s the race that really counts. And if I don’t have a good race, I’ll try to have one at Zandvoort. That’s the way it is, it’s a sport and sometimes things go as you wish, sometimes you have to fight and nothing goes as you want, but I think that’s just the nature of the sport.”

Does he feel that confidence is starting to return after a very challenging period?

“More than confidence, it’s not as if I’ve forgotten how to drive, you know, since five or six races ago.”

“It’s just that you see it with many drivers. Sometimes you are not able to maximise the full potential of your car. And for that reason, you end up lacking the confidence to extract the maximum from the car.”

“I think we have made a good step forward in the right direction since Hungary. I think Silverstone was already quite good, I had a very good Friday. So I think the season… The car is heading in the right direction for now and I hope we can finish the race with a good result.”

“And yet, there’s still a long way to go this season. So yes, I think, as I have said before, the team and I are focusing on what we need to do. Ultimately, it’s about scoring as many points as possible and the rest I don’t care about to be honest.”
