David Coulthard believes Kyalami is ready to rejoin the Formula 1 calendar, following his recent test with Red Bull in October.
South Africa continues to work towards its return to the Formula 1 calendar. In a recent statement from its promoter, it was announced that the Kyalami circuit will undergo developments in order to achieve Grade 1 status, which is required to host World Championship races.
Kyalami first hosted Formula 1 in the 1960s and welcomed the sport again after apartheid in 1992 and 1993 before disappearing completely from the calendar. However, the circuit is now aiming to qualify to hold a race once more.
Earlier in October, Red Bull held an event at Kyalami with a 2011 RB7 and its former driver and current ambassador, David Coulthard. The Scottish driver took the car for a run on the track and shared a very positive assessment.
“Driving the RB7 here at Kyalami was unforgettable,” Coulthard said. “With the energy of South Africa and the world-class Kyalami circuit, it is clear the country is ready to rejoin the Formula 1 calendar.”
