David Coulthard voices concerns about Mercedes F1’s struggles amidst the intense competitiveness of the sport.

David Coulthard is concerned about the competitive struggles of Mercedes F1. The Scotsman hopes to see the Brackley-based team join the battle for victories alongside Red Bull, and to a lesser extent, Ferrari and McLaren.

Without significant improvements, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will remain onlookers in this fight, and Coulthard believes the challenges of modern Formula 1, with its tight margins, should not be underestimated.

“It’s disappointing for all of us. We want to see George and Lewis in the fight,” said the former F1 driver. “They are quality drivers, one of whom has the status of a seven-time world champion, and we know there could be more. They are going through a tough period.”

“But they are experiencing a tough time during one of the most competitive eras in Formula 1. In China, the gap from first to last place was 1.5%. The difference between Usain Bolt winning the 100 meters and the one finishing eighth is 2%! So, it’s all about perspective. These are small margins.”

“But that’s what Formula 1 is about. It represents the best of the best. They are two great drivers. They need to continue to look for areas they can improve on this car. But for now? It’s a tough period.”
